Let’s admit it—the rain and cold doesn’t exactly inspire us to bring our fashion A-game. It is WAY more tempting to be buried in oversized sweaters and gigantic puffy coats, or just refuse to leave the house. The good news is I work with professional stylists, Paula O’Neil and Tracy Pendergast of Est Ovest Style, and we’ve got some concrete tips and tricks to make winter dressing easier. We went shopping at beautiful Mercantile in Portland to pull together some everyday looks that bring cozy chic to the dreary winter months.

Paula gave me this key tip when it comes to shopping this season: “Winter clothing gives some of the best opportunity to use texture to your advantage—leather, cashmere, and (faux) fur can all be used to create interest in an outfit and draw the eye to your favorite features. They’re also fabrics that LAST, so you can invest in a few great pieces to wear over and over, and you’ll get your money’s worth.”

Nothing like the perfect black leather jacket to give shape and warmth at the same time.

This one from Vince is so buttery soft.

Tracy said one easy way to make mulitple layers flattering is to put pattern and color under neutral outerwear with clean lines and subtle waist definition. It draws the eye vertically and makes the look longer and leaner. Winter florals are big this year, so we went with a light sweater from Equipment under a super chic Veronica Beard grey car coat. Emerson boyfriend jeans by Citizens of Humanity keep it casual, and we finished it with a gorgeous Liza Beth necklace.

We’re all a little giddy about the faux fur jackets Mercantile has. They’re really well priced, cruelty free, and just FUN! Paula and Tracy suggested embracing brighter colors to liven up a winter wardrobe, especially when a lack of sunshine can make skin look less vibrant. We layered the rich brown faux fur from John Eshaya with a bright yellow striped tee by Frame. The Weekender Rocket crop by Citizens of Humanity is a skinny jean with the perfect distressed hem. Finishing touch? The See by Chloe brown leather teddy backpack and everyone’s favorite Aya collection hoops.

The right jacket just elevates any outfit, not to mention being a great way to flatter your shape. The bomber silhouette isn’t going anywhere, and it can dress up or down. Throw it over a t-shirt, or layer it like we did here with a light cashmere sweater—stylish AND cozy. Plus this bomber by Roncarti one is reversible! A crossbody bag like this one from Anat Gelbard holds all the essentials.

Using texture, color, and smart layering techniques means winter can be your most flattering season yet! We’ve got even more oufits to share, so check out my instagram along with Est Ovest Style and Mercantile to see more of our favorite looks.
